FALL MINI SESSION
FALL MINI SESSION
Color Pallet:
Pick 2-3 colors to incorporate to tie everyone's outfits together. Pinterest is a great resource for color combo inspiration.
After photographing families for over a decade, I have found that lighter, neutral tones and more muted shades are hands down the most flattering. Bright, bold or neon colors don't photograph as well and tend to be distracting.
For fall sessions, a lot of clients like to go with more warm neutrals like camel, taupe, cream, champagne, and gray. If you’d like to incorporate more color, choose sophisticated jewel or earth-toned versions of bright primary colors. For example: mustard over yellow, crimson or burgundy over red, camel or rust over orange, sage or emerald over green, and powder blue or navy over bright blue.
Choose a Vibe:
Formal? Casual? Somewhere in between? It is totally up to you! Just make sure that everyone has a similar look. If dad is wearing dress slacks and a sport coat, it's going to look out of place for mom to be in jeans.
Also, keep the "season" of your outfits in mind. If one kid is wearing a chunky knit sweater, it's going to feel off balance if another sibling is wearing a summer dress with spaghetti straps.
How to Mix All the Colors
The goal for coordinating a family’s outfits is to visually break up the colors and shades so that you’re not all wearing the same color on top and bottom (like everyone in blue jeans with white shirts. Hello 90s!) The more you can mix it up, the better! Aim for each person to have a different dominant color, and then tie in and vary the accent colors. This will visually break up all the colors and highlight each person and their individual personality.
Jewelry, bow ties, and hair accessories are great ways to incorporated an accent color that will connect you to the rest of the group.
For example, in the photos on this page, notice how one little girl has a predominantly white dress with golden yellow flowers. And then another sister is wearing a golden yellow romper (her dominant color) and white sweater. The oldest daughter has a light denim jumper which ties into dad's blue jeans. And mom is wearing dusty mauve which coordinates well with the purple tone in dad's pin striped shirt.
Pro Tip:
Most of my moms choose their dress first, and then build the rest of the family’s outfits based on that.
